Nigeria set to commence installation of 5Mn solar home power systems

The first phase of installation is expected to be commenced in December 2020 nationwide.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has recently stated that it about to begin the installation of around 5 million solar-home systems across the region, especially for under-served and off-grid communities. According to credible sources, the move is claimed to be in continuation of the implementation of the ESP (Economic Sustainability Plan) which is being coordinated by a committee led by Nigerian Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo.

The proposed development reportedly came into light following a series of tweets posts by the Presidency on November 28, 2020, via an official Twitter handle. As per the tweet, it is claimed that the programme will include manufacturing and assembly of off-grid components to facilitate the growth of the local manufacturing industry.

While an official statement claims that the Central Bank of Nigeria will grant available funds to local companies in the solar power sector that are involved in the assembling, installation, manufacturing and servicing of solar systems, at rates between 5% to 10%.

Apart from providing access to affordable energy, the initiative also targets on improving economic, social, and environmental welfare of about 25 million Nigerians, consequently generating jobs, import substitution, and increasing revenues.

Apparently, the National Environmental Science Program (NESP), which was recently approved by the Federal Executive Council, focuses on developing a plan that accurately responds to the challenges emerged during the Covid-19 pandemic among other terms of reference.

A key part of the plan is to add solar home systems across 5 million households, evidently to serve about 25 million Nigerians who, as of now, are not connected with the National Grid. In a bid to make this initiative a success, solar manufacturers in the region will be required to set up production facilities across Nigeria to offer the necessary components and materials required for large scale installation.
