Samsung working on 600 MP camera sensor, can zoom in 4k and 8K videos

In February 2020, the South Korean multinational conglomerate company- Samsung had launched the 108MP camera sensor. After being well received in the market, the company is now planning to go a step further by developing a 600 MP smartphone camera sensor.

According to a report by Ice Universe, a reliable source in the tech industry, the proposed 600 MP sensor technology by Samsung is being developed using the ISOCELL sensor. Additionally, it will come with a 0.8µm pixel which is similar to the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra model variant.

However, the main challenge that the tech giant currently faces is the increase in the size of camera bump since the 108 MP sensor is already prominent on the Samsung 20 Ultra and the Note 20 Ultra smartphones.

Keeping in mind the size of current smartphones offered by Samsung, the new sensor will take 12 percent of the rear panel. While pixels on smartphone cameras are on a rise but the biggest limitations will always be the device’s slim chassis. As producers increase the pixel count, they will also have to use bigger sensor technology.

Along similar lines, increase in the thickness of the phone by 22 mm due to the use of the new 600 MP sensor will not only lead to a bump on the phone but also make it un-pocketable.

A solution to this problem may be that Samsung designs it as a detachable camera module, just how Oppo is working on removable camera module.

For the record, the new sensor technology will be capable of recording high-definition 4K and 8K videos by ensuring there is no loss of quality while zooming in. Additionally, this feature will be extremely popular among the content creators as they can record high-quality videos and zoom in on a particular area without worrying about poor quality.

That said, a 600 MP sensor could come in handy for products such as surveillance drones, autonomous vehicles, satellites, and other internet- led gadgets which may be introduced in the future.
